DON’T MISS THE CHANCE TO GET FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO ATTEND THE IDS!

December 7th, 2017

Activities at the IDS for young diatomists (funding possibilities):

  1. Get together on Tuesday evening. Icebreaker and presentation of our group with free drink and nibbles, afterwards an informal excursion and supper to experience the Berlin nightlife.
  2. Speed talk session on Thursday. Attending young diatomists (Bachelor, Master and Predoc/PhD students) can participate with creative 2-3 minute presentations on any diatom topic that tickles their fancy. This presentation needs no abstract. It’s an open competition with prizes, so have fun designing a different short lecture.
  3. The election of the new Early Career Researcher (ECR) Representative will take place after the Speed talks (also Thursday). Any early career scientist (Pre- and Postdoc) is welcome as a candidate for the job, to be elected as the representative for the 2 year period. If you are not going to the IDS, but would like to be a candidate anyway, please contact us until May 31st (contact).
  4. Post-conference workshops on Saturday, June 30th, as the topics selected were:
    1. Ecology and bioindication
    2. Palaeoecology (statistics)
    3. How to publish a paper
    4. DNA and taxonomy
Two parallel workshops will take place in the Botanisches Museum (close to the venue), in two sessions in the morning and afternoon. The workshops will be free, so please, remember to register for the workshops in advance! We will provide more information about how to register and workshop lecturers and schedules as soon as we have it.

The final results of our poll are up! 46 young diatomists participated in the poll. We were selecting a maximum of 4 workshops, and due to your votes, we have chosen:
  1. Ecology and Bioindication, with 27 votes
  2. Taxonomy, with 19 votes. Due to DNA-taxonomy being very close in votes (17), we will try to also honour it by adding it to the workshop.
  3. A tie with 18 votes:
    1. Paleoecology
    2. How to publish a paper
We still would like to count on your support, since we'd like to cater to your specific needs. Do you have someone in mind that could be the perfect teacher for the workshop? Then, please contact us through youngdiatomists@gmail.com with your suggestions!

Here you are the results (votes > 10):
